"Hey, I'm home!" I called.

"I’m in the living room," Layne answered.

Ever since the night he'd finally spilled how he was feeling, how he was really feeling, things had started to get better. Layne slowed down drinking, and instead of digging into himself, he was now painting. I walked into the living room to find him standing there on the drop cloth. He was wearing his painting clothes, a pair of blue cotton shorts and a short sleeved black t-shirt, already splattered with a multitude of colors.

He's comfortable enough around me to show his body more.

I'd noticed that was something that he didn't do at first. Layne was always in baggy clothes, long sleeves, anything to conceal how little he weighed and the various marks that littered his pale skin. Now that I looked at him, however, he was completely different. It was almost five months since I first met him, and he'd filled out some. Not only that, but he was in the sun more so his skin had tanned a bit and his marks, even the self-inflicted ones, were healing. Layne looked up at me and tilted his head.

"What's up? You didn't say what you were going out for."

"Oh, I wanted to pick something up." I held out the purple bag in my hand to him. "It's for you."

"For me?" Layne sat his paintbrush down on the little table beside him. "What is it?"

I smiled. "You'll see."

Layne wiped his hands off on a paint spotted cloth. After double checking that they were really clean, he opened up the bag and started removing the lavender tissue paper. When he saw what it was, he gasped and dropped the bag as he snatched out the prize inside. A big panda bear.

"Oh my god, you remembered!" Layne held it tightly against his chest before he buried his face in the fur. "I've wanted another one like this for so, so long."

I smiled. Yeah, I knew all too well. He'd told me one night, when he'd had a little too much wine, about a panda bear that he had when he was a kid. It was special to him, something that he dragged along with him everywhere. When he moved in with Kintan, of course, it came along with him, but now it was still there. No matter how many attempts I made to get it for him, to speak to Kintan like a rational human being so Layne could get his belongings back, it never worked. Layne had finally blocked him a few days ago, really ready to sever all ties with the bastard. I was so proud of him that I had to do something nice for him.

"I didn't know what your last one looked like, so I can only hope that this one is close." I smiled. "I kept seeing you watch the live feed from Zoo Atlanta of the pandas so I figured I would grab you one."

"Are you kidding?" Layne whispered, his eyes already watering. "He's amazing! Oh, I didn't think I would get to see mine again, but this is just as good.
